Still, by far the best restaurant experience I have had to date! Every employees has thorough knowledge of everything, from the host to the server they area phenomenal, experienced, and professional staff.... The food is high quality and reasonably priced considering what you are getting... Not to mention the wine... Or scotch if that's what you are into! I highly recommend this place for brunch, date night, happy hour, or whatever!

  • Rachel C.

First timer. Got here with 20 minutes until happy hour ended on a Thursday night. That's 6 pm. I thought that was a little early for happy hour. Sat outside, service was great. Food was good but nothing spectacular. We had the olive medley, pork steamed buns (really good, a bit soggy), and the shrimp bruschetta (really soggy but tasty). Wine is overpriced. For happy hour, it was a good time at good prices.

Best brunch in town center...love the atmosphere and friendly service. No snooty people in THIS establishment and they ensure your meal is perfect. OH and 30 percent off all wine today!

  • Creagan B.

This place was awesome! Aaron, our server had impeccable knowledge of the wines. The 'wine tap' at the bar was cool because you could get a fresh glass of wine. If you are in Town Center just go in and check out the taps and get a glass of wine. The food was really good too! The crabcakes were flawless! The surf and turf special was really tasty. The scallops app. was majestical! Malbec I had by the glass was super special, it had a 'smokey' flavor that was surprising and pleasing at the same time. I definitely suggest to go here. I would request Aaron to be my server.

--4.5 stars-- My guy did a wonderful job of surprising me with dinner here! Once inside, I couldn't help but notice the pretty makeshift fireplace like area of lights and crates by the sitting area. Quite cozy and chic ambiance. We sat at the high tables

Went here on a weekend trip to Virginia Beach with two of my girl friends. Everyone was very accommodating and helpful. Food-wise, the meat and cheese board was fantastic. We got the goat cheese, the bleu, the duck prosciutto, and the foie gras pate. We pretty much cleaned the plate. Then I got the Almond Scallops. I kind of wish they used panko breading as it's lighter and wouldn't make the scallop look so much like a giant chicken nugget but it was okay. The cous cous was probably the best part of it. There were bits of banana in it that were surprising in a good way. My friend got the mahi but it wasn't so great. There wasn't much flavor in it. They cut the piece too thick so the flavor doesn't get all the way through. My other friend got the pasta and said it was good though. I can see this as a great place to go a bit classy and maybe after a concert performance across the street.

  • Dexter M.

Definitely a nice place. Went here for a date during happy hour. They have a very extensive wine list but not by the glass. If you want variety you have to buy a bottle. My favorite type of wine is chianti and they did not sell that buy the glass, also they only had one glass of Shiraz. Other than that, the happy hour prices are decent but again not a wide range to select from. We only ordered appetizers. I ordered the tuna tartare and she had a Caesar salad. Food was decent. No complaints. Overall I would have to come back to see how good the food is. Good experience not great.

  • Rob H.

Excellent service by Wes!! He was attentive, knowledgable and everything one could ask for in a dining experience. I always enjoy Sonoma for wine and appetizers and have never been let down for the quality of their meals. The beef is grass fed (as opposed to Ruth Chris's corn fed beef...) and creatively prepared by the chef. I just wish the food was warm. Everything was cold.

One of the best places in Virginia Beach; the do a great brunch! Great, obviously, wine listings that pare exceptionally well with their menu items.

  • W W.

Note: We did not order entrees. We only had dessert and wine. Called ahead to see if the patio was dog friendly. They said yes, so off we went. Service was impeccable! They even brought a bowl of water for our dog. Wine was great and dessert was great. We will be back!

I stopped in for "happy hour" but not much was happy about it.. The decor was really pretty and the wine was fine but that's about where the good things end.. The happy hour menu was pretty short and nothing really seemed appetizing.. The place was pretty empty and the staff all seemed pretty bored. At one point I saw a staff member cleaning already clean cups. While I was leaving the place I noticed a small leak from the ceiling, I alerted the staff and she not only blew it off but was like "yea I know".. Umm I don't care what's causing it you may not want your restaurant leaking on customers. Since I didn't order food I don't have much to base the review off of but on ambiance alone, I wasn't impressed.

Nice restaurant in the Virginia beach downtown area with snooty bartender!! While our goal was to enjoy the menu, it would have been nice to have that accompanied by great service. The foods and drinks were great and the ambiance was very relaxing!

Came in for lunch last Friday. They have an awesome happy hour noon until around 6p! Their fruit Moscato is amazing! What's NOT so amazing is..we only came because the menu says they have bread pudding..in which they did not, what they had was (cold) banana bread. this news saddened me I would've left but I'd already eaten (Chicken Cesar salad) which was also a disappointment, the salad was plated horribly! (Please see photo) the Romain lettuce was cut in half only once resulting in huge leaves I could barely pick up with a fork and felt like a cow trying to chew...and the dressing..under the lettuce. I guess everybody wants to be different no matter how rediculous it is. ** I would like to add: The salad as well as the banana bread had potential to be great..with a few tweaks here, a few tweaks there...anything is possible.

Great spot for a date night! Food: Small portion but delicious. Also beautiful! Interior: Cool! Good taste. Relaxing. Romantic at night. Staff: Friendly and sophisticated. Price: Up to how much you usually eat. Lunch $10-20. Dinner is up to how much wine you wanna drink! Parking Lot: There are many in a walking distance. Free outside parking.

  • Tobias A.

Although the menu selection and wine selection were great...service was sub-standard! Took about 15 minutes to get water...and then the waitress would come by every 20 minutes or so! I'm not a wine bar regular - so can't compare to other places...however - make sure you have a few hours to burn!

Sonoma has always provided an awesome experience. The staff is friendly and has accommodated all my visits. I've been here for a ladies' lunch, work lunch, friend's surprise birthday dinner, VB Restaurant Week and I've organized a happy hour for the Young Filipino Professionals. The food is delicious. I love the cheese board and the wine! It's pricey, so I don't get to eat here often. It's a cozy spot in the heart of Town Center.

Sonoma never disappoints. The classy wine bar ambiance is great for dates, girls night in sexy heels, business deals, and mother-daughter time, and yes, I have been here for the all of the above. I usually call ahead and request the best--Aaron. Right off the bat, Aaron is tempting me with the selection of wines--as he describes the plum and cinnamon undertones with earthy appeal. I totally trust his recommendation. As for dinner, the steaks, fish, and more are of the highest quality and you can always sell me with a pairing of risotto. The menu changes occasionally and they always have specials...Aaron and I have this rapport, usually I can just say to him, "Just tell me what I want" and voila, he brings out a plate of true satisfaction. For days when I am a bit more decisive, I will usually go with one of the steaks or perhaps a duck special (although I am less impressed with the current duck on the nightly menu--sliced over rabbit food--meh--not what I imagine when I am salivating for duck). Sonoma is just one of those places you have to make room for dessert. My favorite at the moment, the turtle parfait. It is like Christmas in my mouth and it comes out on caramel stilts to add to the excitement! The bread pudding is also a naughty little prize. Or maybe you are feeling a little creme brulee-ish...hmm, hmm. Sonoma is a keeper in Town Center and what nice little oasis from the monotony of chain restaurants there.

Do not go here. We had a Groupon and I didn't ready the reviews of this place until after I bought the Groupon. It was so slow. Food was okay. I am allergic to cheese. Told our server and when I ordered my entree she came back and said there was milk it the sauce but the dish could be made without it. Fine. Ordered Mussels appetizer, which no t say cheese and started eating. It Was covered in ramano cheese.

Once again I came here at the behest of a friend and once again the wine and food was excellent and the service sucked. They never have enough staff, the waiter was spread wayyayyyyyy too thin and so I waited 20 minutes to even get my check. The waiter never even asked me if I wanted a second glass of wine. The hostess who could have run drinks or helped stood around and did...nothing. will not be back if I can help it.

I can't say anything about the quality of the food/drink and I'll explain why... My wife and I met up with her parents for brunch on Saturday. After checking menus and hours online, we selected Sonoma and were excited for all the egg benedicts they offer. We came to their front door and saw the hours posted there saying "Open Daily 10:00am - 6:00pm" but the doors are locked at 10:16am with no other signage about being closed, etc. Peek inside the windows and see a small group of folks at one table - owners or staff maybe? Anyway, we stand there and awkwardly stare at each other as they make no move to open the door, explained why they are closed, or even wave us away. Wah-wah. Great job with that customer service piece! Had a nice little breakfast at the Simply Fresh Cafe across the street instead.

Sat at the bar.. Jaimie the bartender a sweetheart and very knowledgeable... Had the beet salad and a meat and cheese board that was awesome... Don't. Miss the Venge zinfandel.. Worth the money...

This place is pretty good and they offer some nice steals for your tummy as meals. Just kidding, that was lame. But seriously, I've been here twice once for dinner and another for a late lunch in my case early dinner. We choose to sit outside because the weather was beautiful, that and the happy hour specials were for the bar or patio only. The inside of the place is very snazzy. Wine bottles galore. Its nice and dark and makes for a great little intimate date. Their happy hour deals are great, I ordered 4 appetizers and 4 glasses of wine for like 45 bucks! The appetizers were half off and their glasses of wine are 5 bucks a pop. I ordered sweet Riesling and a Spanish Resbuto. Loved them both. The appetizers I ordered were the Olive Melody, Prince Edward Mussels, Volcano Rolls and the Shrimp Bruschetta. The olive melody was plain and simple, for 3 bucks its was definitely not a bad deal. A mixture of kalamata and spanish olives with huge mozzarella balls and a demi baguette. I killed it. The Prince Edwards Mussels were abundunant in size considering they were like 6 bucks. There was about 24 of them in a light pinot noir sauce and warm arugala salad. The salad was really good with the wine sauce but I feel like it was too much sauce and the sauce too light. Overall a good deal though. The volcano rolls were awesome. Warm crispy creamy fish goodness. Volcano rolls are one of my favorite warm sushis so its hard for me to say nay to this dish. It was excited nicely and presented beautifully. Finally, the shrimp bruschetta was perhaps my least favorite. The wild mushroom pate-like sauce was yummy but I think it was the way the bread was soggy and drowned in sauce. When I think of bruschetta I think of a hard bread not a pliable mushy airy bread. I tried picking it up with my hands and I couldn't...it fell to pieces. However, the flavors were nice. The sauce was very onion-y and the shrimp was steamed. Overall? It was good. I'd love to come back and try some cheese boards and entrees. The happy hour deals are just good enough for me to return.

In my eyes, this is a swanky hole in the wall. You cannot use your groupon with the happy hour specials, which sucks, cause you could really clean up with it. The happy hour specials are great.

Three stars for ambiance, ease of reservation and service. This is a great spot for a drink date or a glass of wine but the food perplexed me. I ordered the restaurant week menu thinking that this would be a solid tasting menu because obviously if they were making the dishes often, they would be perfect. All I can say is - its a lovely place. But the food just didn't work for me. I had some sort of deconstructed apple pie - I needed a knife to eat it. Not good. The chicken meal I had was just weird. I honestly just wanted it to be over. But - decor is lovely - really a beautiful nightcap or pre-night drink spot. But eat someplace else.

This place was pretty nice. The food was excellent and so was the wine. It would be good for a date or just a girl's night. Make sure it's payday though because it's very expensive. The cheapest wine by the glass is almost 10 dollars. I had a Groupon so I tried a few things. Their greens salad was excellent. I also had the crab and artichoke dip and my friend had the tuna tartare. Mine was good and she loved hers. She had a couple of dirty martinis and I had some Austrian white. I loved my wine. It was very good. Service was also good I thought but my waiter had to ask the bartender for a wine recommendation which I thought was weird. Overall a nice place. Make sure you dress nicely. Not a casual place at all.

This is one of my favorite indulgences in Hampton Roads. We came here for a nice dinner before a symphony performance, and I'm so glad we did! The atmosphere was quiet but cool, with really nice decorating touches. Our server was fun and informative, while staying professional. They had a couple of great wine recommendations that we took them up on, and were not disappointed. When a salad stands out as one of the memorable things of dinner, you can assume one of two things: either the rest of the meal was boring, or the salad was fabulous. In this case, it's the latter. The Ceasar Salad came "deconstructed": all of the components were there, but not all mixed together ahead of time like most ceasar salads. This meant that you could control exactly how much of each ingredient you wanted. In my case, as much of each as possible, because the dressing was great and carried the other flavors of parmesan and pepper beautifully. The artichoke and crab dip appetizer was also phenomenal. While I like other dips that involve these two ingredients separately (and with others, like spinach), I deeply appreciated the balance of this dip. I wasn't too heavy/greasy, and was more about the crab and artichoke than the melted cheese that usually dominates these types of dishes. I honestly don't even remember what I ordered for an entree - but I do remember enjoying it, and also having a hard time choosing what to order, since there were so many things that sounded delicious. We will definitely be back, hopefully followed by the symphony again, sometime soon!

I came here on a date, so I didn't really know what to order. I just got a crab cake dish, some clam chowda, and some moscato. The wine selection was better than the cuisine and while I'm not a wine pundit, I have a refined enough palate to know okay wine from the good stuff. The food was overtly salty, but the atmosphere was very upscale and chic. I've experienced better cuisine at CineBistro. If you're looking to just make an impression and flash cash and your fancy car, go there if you like, otherwise I'd take my chances at California Pizza Kitchen before I went here again.

Avoid at all costs. One caveat: the wine selection is myriad. The service is terrible. The service is terrible. It was worth repeating. The food was bland, although properly cooked. I had the mahi and it went from one extreme of no flavor to the other extreme of overpowering the fish and my reflexively reaching for the wine glass. Nothing about the food should ever be repeated, especially my eating of it. I will stake my reputation on this place having horrible service and culinary negligence. The online menu has items they have since removed. On the night I was there they were out of the prime rib, out of the dragon roll, and out of chairs. I don't like TGI Fridays, but I dislike this place even more. You get worse food than at a chain, but you do get to pay about 3-4x as much for it.

I really love places like this. Fancy wine bar places that serve good food, whose walls are lined with so many varieties of wine your head will spin. After watching an awesome flash mob to Gangnam Style at Town Center in VB, I noticed this place and convinced my friends into going, too. I'm glad I did. This is the type of place I would bring my sister and some other friends. Its a nice spot, great selection and decent prices. I'm looking forward to going back soon.

This is not our first time here. We dine here often before a show at the Sandler Center. The chef changes up the menu often and comes up with very creative dishes. We started with a shared spinach salad dressed with a light vinaigrette. My wife had the chicken tortellini, delicious tender chicken with tender tortellini. I had the duck leg special, a roasted duck leg on a bed of pasta-duck comfit. The duck leg was perfect! The meal was delicious. The wine suggested by Jesse, our server was great with the duck. We topped off the meal with the signature dessert, the Turtle Parfait.

  • Amber C.

Went here with a couple of girlfriends kid free. Atmosphere is 5 stars. I am a sweet white wine drinker, and they only had 3 sweet wine selections by the glass. Which is fine, but for a wine bar I had hoped for better. The best part of the meal was the cheese plate, everything else was average and absolutely over priced. I don't think I would go back for that reason. It's one thing to be expensive and high quality but I was unimpressed with my meal, as were my friends, I would go back for drinks and appetizers but skip the main course!

Imagine you're from SoCal and just moved to Virginia. Ocean's on the wrong side, throwing off decades of navigating roads with "water on the left" to head north; seeing the sun rise over the ocean rather than set. It's different, to say the least. This was officially the first restaurant we visited in Virginia, and it was quite the welcome. We honestly stumbled on it trying to find another store and a drink and a snack seemed to be in order. First impressions were: clean, warm, inviting, good location. Second impression: THEY SELL WINE TO TAKE HOME! They had just opened, and service was great...friendly, knowledgable and attentive. No reading off flash cards to summarize wine characteristics. I think the only reason why we haven't gone back is because Mermaid is so much closer. The more I think about it, I need to go back.

Sonoma Wine Bar is wonderful. They have a crazy selection of wine, obviously, but they also serve beer and cocktails. The charcuterie boards are to die for. My husband had the filet and risotto, I ordered the crabcakes. The filet was perfectly cooked, risotto was nicely prepared. The crabcakes were grilled which was a nice touch. They were served over crispy fried potatos in a spicy chipotle sauce. When eaten together, the effect is remarkable. We had a wonderful evening and the staff was kind, welcoming, and made great wine selections. Wes, our server, was funny and helpful. We're very excited to return for dinner.

I've been to Sonoma Wine Bar & Bistro (in VB Town Center) twice in the past few months: For drinks/dessert and for brunch. Overall, it's a classy place to eat with good food in an elegant setting. Pros: For brunch, my French toast was delectable! And very reasonably priced for a nice restaurant ($10). The desserts we tried were good. The restaurant is very classy in a modern style with flickering (fake) candle lights in the hearth, bare floors and high ceilings. Cons: The service both times I went was only so-so. The wait staff is adequate, but not great. For instance, they seemed confused at brunch when we wanted more hot water for our tea and said that the individual tea pots were in the dishwasher. At night, they only had one waiter for a table of 8-10 of us and service was a little slow. Nothing egregiously bad, but nothing great either. Overall, I liked the place and would like to return again soon.

Phenomenal food, wine, and dessert. I will return! But not often (only because it's so expensive). One appetizer, three entrees, the cheapest bottle of wine they had (about $35), and one dessert was almost $200. The servers are knowledgeable of the menu and wine, which is something I really enjoyed about this dining experience. The menu is unique. It's obvious they take a lot of care and consideration when it comes to food planning and preparation. You will not be disappointed!

The food is great and been before but this particular time, it literally took me and my wife over an hour and a half to get two lunch sandwiches and service in general. TERRIBLE! The place was not crowded AT ALL either. Just mind blowing of a place like this to be INCREDIBLY slow with food and service. Totally disappointed. Food still good but dang

Sonoma had a great wine selection and the decor was cool. Not your typical chain restaurant like the others in the area. Stick to the apps and salads, the mains aren't very well composed and over priced.

What a joke! Absolutely no alcohol in our Bloody Mary's (Three). Service was good however dishes were just OK. Lots of filler in the Crab Cakes. These three foodies will never go back as there are too many better places to put down our money.

I came here with a girlfriend to celebrate her new employment and I'm definitely glad we came. The atmosphere is inviting and the servers are very professional. I started off with a glass of the Italian Pino Grigio- and ended with the same thing. Fantastic wine, I'd definitely reccomend it to anyone. First up was the appetizer- Sriracha with Korean beef "buns"? Oh yes. OH YES. They called it a steamed bun but it really looked like a taco. Regardless, it was delicious. I then had the salmon dinner. The server reccomended it and said that I wouldn't be disappointed- and I definitely wasn't. Their version of the macaroni and cheese was fantastic and the salmon was cooked perfectly. It's sad that it wasn't until near the end of my dinner that I noticed the bar. I don't know how to explain it- but on the wall there are maybe 100 dispensers hooked up to wine. It's super cool. This place was expensive so I won't be a regular, but I will come to celebrate special occassions here for sure!

Forgot to do a review! OMG!! Food is amazing, wine is magnificent, and The service was impeccable! Couldn't ask for a better experience! Not enough time to taste everything, although I wanted to! Had the surf and turf and they subbed scallops for the lobster tail...AMAZING!! Tried the creme brûlée with orange marmalade, also to DIE FOR! Paired everything with a Malbec which was great on the palate! Will definitely be going back!

Went on a saturday night at 6 pm; did not make a reservation since we figured it was early. They sat us in a back room to ourselves, which was odd, considering how many tables were empty (and still were when we finished). Both of our entrees were amazing; perfectly hot and amazing taste and presentation. I like our waiter, who was very nice but dissapointed that he did not help with the wine selection. The best tip, would be to make a reservation first and to dress to impress; otherwise I would say you are somewhat treated like second class citizens.

$13.00 for a glass of wine?!?! Don't get me wrong, it was good - but dang! The ambiance is relaxing and the staff is attentive and knowledgable about their wines. They do have several flights to choose from and you can even create your own flight if you don't like the ones listed on the menu. I wouldn't mind returning to try their food because what I could see and smell from other patrons looked very appetizing.

I hate when people go to nice, classy places and spend their whole review complaining about prices. Yes, Sonoma is at a different price point than Bennigans but you're absolutely paying for what you get. From the incredibly impressive wine list to the beautifully adorned interior, Sonoma is a true class act. Their wine flights range from $12-15 and we began with the rose flight; very interesting picks from Spain and France. I really must take a moment to commend their wine/glass list. They had varietals that I have never seen offered by the glass before, such as a rare Cabernet Franc from France and Pinotage from South Africa. It's one thing to have a large wine/bottle list to choose from, most wine bars have that, but their wine/glass list DEFINITELY stood out and it has got to be the best, most selective and interesting wine/glass list in the entire hampton roads area. I was in heaven. So we started out with a half board of cheese & charcuterie. Do not miss this people. I was dying over the foie gras pate and my husband over the duck prosciutto. Their accompaniments are also some of the best I've seen in the area, rivaling Vintage Tavern. The cheeses were not bad, I would have liked to see a few more options than a goat cheese from the U.S. and a couple mild cheeses from France, but they were fine. For entrees, I ordered the almond scallops and my husband ordered the Pasta Sonoma. Both had very delicious and dynamic flavors and were well presented. It is worth noting that they ran out of the scallops for my husband's dish (which we had to point out) but the waitress comped us 2 free desserts. I always appreciate a restaurant who rectifies their mistake. With dessert I ordered one of my favorite cocktails, an espresso martini, and it was one of the best I've ever had. Overall, is this a pricey restaurant? Sure, but it's definitley top 5 for me in hampton roads as far as chic ambiance, food ingenuity and an excellent wine list. They also have a fabulous lounge area to come and just have a glass of wine after a show or movie. As far as the town center goes, Sonoma is probably the only place I'd take anyone I wanted to impress. Kudos!

My husband and I went here for Valentines day with a groupon and a $70 gift card. We still ended up paying quite a bit extra. It was okay but I would have gone somewhere else for the price. If you love wine, this is a good place to check out.

I tried the Grilled Chicken over roasted roma tomatoes and spinach tossed with penne pasta and sautéed with white wine and basil pesto... This dish was very tasteless, I managed to pick around and eat the chicken and tomatoes. The spinach, white wine and pesto were lacking. I always finish my meal, no matter how tasteless it is, however, I left most of the penne in the dish. My wife had the pan seared flounder; she said it was more like fried fish. A little pricey for the portion sizes, the service was mediocre, my water remained empty for a good 15-20 minutes before the waiter finally came back to check on us. We saw him twice; once to take our orders and again while walking away from the table, he asked how the meal was. We definitely will not return...

Food was decent, wine list had very few if any Sonoma or Napa wines, service was slow, interior has a great look. Could have just been an off day, but not a great first impression.

I can't tell you how much I wanted this place to be better. I came here on New Year's Eve 2014 for what my five friends and I had hoped would be a better experience. First, the pros: The decor is chic, and festive enough for New Year's Eve. Although the walkway between the bar and the tables is narrow, I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't enjoy hanging out at the bar, which has an upscale but still relaxed vibe. Our waiter was fairly knowledgable, though he oversold the whole "farm to table" and "locally sourced" aspect. That may be true for the produce, but I'm certain that it's nearly impossible to find sustainable salmon or ahi tuna anymore, and those fish are certainly not local. The wine list is extensive, and offers about 60 wines by the glass that you would probably never see anywhere else but a wine bar. The beer list is also surprisingly good, but the bar was under stocked, though I do realize this might have been a side effect of it being New Year's Eve. The desserts are inventive, and tasty. Now, the cons: The host needs to take a Xanax or something. Dude is probably about 19 years old, but his stress level is comparable to that of a stock broker in the middle of the bull pen. This is the service industry pal - put on your happy face and don't take it off until you go home. Needless to say, getting a cold, snooty, "Name?" as a greeting from a kid barely old enough to drive did not put me in the most festive of moods. Service, was a little slow, but again, it was New Year's Eve, so no sweat. We took our time checking out the drink menu, and while the wine selection by the glass was impressive, the prices were not. $10 for a 2 oz pour? That's just insane. Especially since virtually all of the reds by the glass were priced this way. The whites were better priced, but I'm a red wine drinker, so I eventually settled on a $16 5 oz glass of Pinot noir. It was delicious, but I wasn't about to order more than one glass at that price, since we had a whole dinner left to pay for. I will admit that I am the annoying vegetarian at the table, but every upscale restaurant that I have been to has been able to accommodate me. I glanced at the menu, and apart from salad and a boring pasta dish, there was nothing on the menu that I could have eaten, not even among the appetizers. I'm pretty accustomed to this, though, so I instead noticed that the crab cake entree came with a side of "vegetable lasagna and shoestring potatoes." "Delicious!" I thought. I asked the waiter if I could just get the sides for the crab cake entree sans crab cakes, and after a confused conversation, we figured it out. Or at least, I thought we had. I received my "meal," two pieces of cold, over-cooked, congealed vegetables smashed together in a square mold. No potatoes either, just a measly half a handful of micro greens with no trace of dressing or sauce anywhere. I couldn't even finish it. And to top it off, they charged us $26 for that. I could have had a generous and delicious side of truffle mac and cheese at Eurasia for $8. In short, I would only suggest coming here for wine, and maybe a cheese plate or dessert. Those are the only items that come close to being worth the outrageous price tag. But I'd still choose Eurasia over this place any day.

I love the ambiance of this place in the middle of Town Center, which I never noticed before. It's intimate, sexy and laid back. It's ideal for a date yet also suitable for a girls' night out. There is plenty of seating from the bar to the tables and the booths. The service provided during my visit was excellent; the server was attentive without being overbearing. Sonoma offers a variety of food tasted fresh and well-prepared. there is also a wide variety of drinks, from beers to wines to cocktails. I appreciate that they not only offer typical Bloody Marys and mimosas as part of the Sunday brunch fare, but a happy hour as well...on a Sunday! Sounds blasphemous but I am sure some (myself included) would put it to good use. I definitely plan to return soon!

To quote one of our dining companions..."They just fancied themselves out." We met another couple here a few nights ago before a show at the Sandler. We had wanted to try Sonoma for quite some time but up to this point we had never been able to escape the gravitational pull of Saffron Indian Bistro just around the corner. The smell of curry works its hypnotic effect on both of us every time but for some reason we were able keep our concentration until we reached the door of Sonoma. The wine list is impressive and the bartender made a passable dirty martini. The waitress was also very professional and had our food out to us in plenty of time for the show with plenty of drink refills. No complaints on that front. However, the food just didn't have the wow factor that I expect when I pay these prices. I have no qualms about these price points when the food meets the expectations. Just not the case here. The Korean pork buns were decent but my scallop entree was really just a plate of sauteed scallops with a sweet potato hash. It even seemed to lack seasoning. My wife's smoked duck breast over sweet potato gnocchi was borderline inedible. Neither of us has an issue with smoky flavors but this duck was dominated by it. No balance whatsoever and some of the gnocchi were even burned on the bottom. Major fail for a $30 entree in my opinion. Maybe I am just over fine dining (with a few notable exceptions since I can still hear the angels sing whenever I walk into Terrapin). I find that I lack patience for the utter pretentiousness that drips out of every corner of places like Sonoma. I get much more excited over a plate of good sushi or authentic tacos these days. I could see coming here for an appetizer and a drink at the bar with your date but for dinner? Nope. Just not my bag anymore, baby.

Went here with a group of girlfriends tonight and was in love with the decor! Had tons of wine to choose from and a large menu but all menu options were very "wine bar" aka not bar food :)- I got a Caesar salad with shrimp which was yummy and like $15- look forward to my next trip here though will eat before hand!

I seldom come here. Why I don't know. It is actually a really cool place in Town Center Virginia Beach that I really enjoy patronizing. The place has a really nice and upscale feel to it. Nicely decorated, high end furniture, spacious but not too large, intimate yet casual all at the same time. Even better is that you don't feel overwhelmed if you're not decked out in a suit or dress. You'll fit right in with jeans (I'd shy away from sneakers or t-shirts, though). I've come for lunch on a few occasions a few years back when I worked in Town Center and to what I remember the food is fairly decent. I recently tried their Tuna Tartare and that was quite delicious. I've never tried eating here for dinner but it is on my to do list. This is a wine bar but I'm more of a beer drinker so I can't speak to what they offer. I just know that by looking at all the bottles on the wall behind the bar the selection is vast. I mostly come here because the place is very relaxing, good for business meetings and the staff is very friendly. They do have a special room in the back that would accommodate 8-10 people so if you want to roll deep for lunch or dinner request that room in advance. Also, when the weather is pleasant outdoor seating is available. So far so good and when I come back for lunch and/or dinner and can write about what I ordered and how the food tastes I'll re-review this venue.

Thanks to Groupon, we visited for the first time last night. It's a bit of a drive from the casa, and we're not out this direction too much, but it was a nice enough place that we'd go back if given the opportunity. We arrived at 5pm and enjoyed the remainder of Happy Hour (3-6pm) which is apparently 1/2-off appetizers and six wines at $5/glass (3 white/3red). There were a few (5-6) people at the bar but otherwise it was vacant. The only complaint is that our waitress did not tell us what was included in the Happy Hour fare and we had to pry it out of her, we ended up starting out at her suggestion with a great viognier but at regular price. In writing this review, I've learned that there are also a few $5 well drinks, $2.50 domestic beers, $3 imports. Why do I have to hunt that down!!!??? Appetizers at half off with the Les Jamelles viognier (good pairing) - The tuna tartare was phenomenal and came with four pieces. Excellent. $13 - The shrimp bruschetta was excellent, but they did the annoying trend of only serving three pieces. You can ask for a fourth so you can split it with your cohort, but I'm sure it costs. $13 With our Côtes du Rhône and Dante Cab ($5/glass) - We enjoyed a full meat and cheese board (4 meats/4 cheeses) and we able to swap out the foie gras pate for a second dose of the serrano ham. $39 The atmoshpere was nice, and around 6pm the patrons started to come in for dinner, so it started to get a little energy going. They had plenty of bottled wines and a decent amount of wines by the glass, but as a wine bar, it could/should do a lot more by the glass.

Well we had a reservation at 9.our table was great and the company was even better. Then our waiter comes over and hands down could have been the worst waiter I have ever had. He was short with us and rude. I would say his name he was never around long enough for us to get it. We were going to stay for dessert but decided to go somewhere else because he sucked so bad. Hopefully someone in a high ranking position or owner reads this and fires him before he ruins anyone else's experience there. A couple in our group (originally from here but now live in DC) said they will never go back. Thanks again short, balding, fohawk, prick for ruining our experience. Oh, but the food was awesome. That is all.

The food had the potential to be good but it just wasn't. Definitely overpriced for the quality of the food. The soup was brought out at not even room temperature. We sent it back and it came out hot. The meat on both of our entrees was over cooked. I had the braised pork over gnocchi and the gnocchi appeared to be either pan fried of deep fried. Either way is was not very good. The only thing good about it was the broccolini and the sauce. My husband had the grilled chicken over cheese filled tortellini. The chicken was so dry that it looked unappealing so he asked for another chicken. Which took awhile to be brought out so by then the pasta was cold. The pasta and sauce was very good. But when you are paying $24 and $28 for the food it should be excellent. Glad we came in as first timers with a groupon. Before dinner I was telling my husband how good the lunch menu looked and that we would have to come back. After our dinner experience we will NOT be back.

Unknowingly made the mistake of going during town center's restaurant week. We didn't have a reservation and were told a table would be available in an hour. We sat on the couches, had a drink and chatted with a couple. Table was ready less than a quarter through our drink. We were asked if we cashed out with the server for drinks. I asked if it could just be transferred to our table. Ohhh, got the stink eye for that request but was done. Took a look at the prix fixe menu and decided to order from the regular menu. Sonoma was chosen deliberately so we'd have stellar food. Price doesn't dictate quality, however. We were greeted after sitting for at least 10 minutes. I had the $39 ribeye medium rare and substituted the asparagus for their au gratin potatoes which our server raved about. My friend ordered a filet medium rare. The food runner dropped our food off. Steaks were cooked according to temp ordered. Tasty but I didn't feel it was a $40 steak. The ragout was not particularly pretty or tasty. The au gratin was cold in the middle and looked and tasted like it had been in the walk in for about 2 weeks. I would've mentioned to the server but she didn't come back. Server didn't return until 25 minutes later to ask how our food was. By that time I just wanted to leave. I answered with a shrug and "meh. Check please." I was sure to tip the server we got drinks from on the way out. Clearly, restaurant week wore our server down. Sonoma gets 2 stars for the steak. If I could give zero stars for service, I would. At average $50 per person, I, as anyone would, have some expectations for service and quality of food. None were met. Will definitely not be going back considering how lack luster our experience was.

Took the WIF here for a glass of port/ wine after the comedy show this evening: Service was good. Port was good but very expensive. Jury is still out for me on this one as I have not eaten here yet but a place to visit for a glass of wine with your significant other is recommended.

Found myself in Virginia Beach on business and stumbled into Sonoma Wine Bar and Bistro. Oh, what a lucky stumble for a hard core foodie! The cheese and meat board was a great start- loved the duck prosciutto and even loved the buttery pâté- even though I generally turn my nose up at anything involving liver. Normally I do not order anything fried- but glad I made an exception for the scallops- almond crusted scallops on a bed of banana cous cous. The plating was beautiful. Desserts were also a work of art- wine list was wonderful and I enjoyed the opportunity to try 2 ounce sizes of different wines. Highly recommend.

I was there with a large group and I think that colored my view a bit. The food was fantastic. I had the corn and crab chowder and the almond scallops. Both were fresh and full of flavor. My compliments to the kitchen staff! We shared a few cheese boards and they are interesting and very well done. The service was great with friendly and very knowledgeable servers. The only problem I had was the wait. We did have about twenty people for a business dinner but the entire meal was nearly three hours. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. Just try it as a couple or a small group.

I was a little skeptical of this place because anything in town center tends to feel a bit chain-like and/or forced. Sonoma Wine Bar was awesome! The service and ambiance were fantastic. We also lucked out and hit it during happy hour. Half priced appetizers and $5 wine?...yes please!! Normal hours call for pretty hefty prices but we felt the food was worth it for a special occasion. That said, we'll definitely be back for another happy hour! I've also heard that they have a great brunch on the weekends with cheap mimosas but haven't experienced it myself. They also offer free valet parking...

Went to Sonoma for what was billed as a 5-course South American dinner and wine event. Never been there before. It cost $65.00 per person. The event began at 6:30 p.m. It was NOT a five-course dinner. In my experience, five courses are typically appetizer, soup, salad, entree, and dessert. Their version was a tiny little tuna appetizer (seriously two bites) followed by three tapas-sized entree samples served at thirty minute intervals - NOT a meal. Then we were given a tapas sized dessert. All three entree samples were meat - pork, beef, lamb. There was no fish, chicken, pasta, whatever. We didn't get out until 9:30. Seriously. It took 30 minutes at least between each serving and every entree sample was stone cold! There was sufficient wine flowing and it was pretty good. That said, we were practically sloshed by the time the event ended. I guess they figured as long as the wine was flowing they could take as long as they wanted to with the food. I told every staff member that passed by that the food was terrible and cold and that the food was taking way too long. All I got from the sommelier who apparently was in charge of the event when I complained was "it will be right out". Twenty five minutes later the last entree sample came out. There was no introduction to the wine or discussion about it. They didn't offer any information about why they chose those wines. The only reason we didn't walk out was because we were enjoying the company of our table-mates. The food was certainly not South American and certainly not what you would expect from an upscale restaurant. They did comp my meal, but not my husbands. DO NOT fall for the 5-sourse dinner line. It was three hours of wine and cold hors d'oeuvres. What a hot mess! Such a disappointment. We will not return to Sonoma. There are too many very cool choices in Virginia Beach.

This restaurant tries, but it's just not worth what they charge. The service was mediocre at best. The appetizers we had were great. The entrees were just good, but nothing out of the ordinary. At over $30/plate, the food really should be excellent. The atmosphere is nice for an after work cocktail or appetizer, but pretty loud for a date night.

We had dinner here for our Girl's Night out, about two years ago. Roughly fifty dollars for one glass of Moscato & not-so-tasty pasta with two pieces of shrimp. The only plus side was the decor- very classy. I most likely will not be coming back. I could spend way less money, & get way more satisfaction elsewhere.

Stepping into Sonoma Wine Bar always makes me feel so cosmopolitan. And I don't even think I knew what that meant until I came here. The lights are low, the wine selection is extensive and the staff is, let's go with the adjective classy. If this was New York I'd probably peg them as wannabe actors and models, but in Virginia Beach maybe they're just well dressed wine connoisseurs. Anyway the Sonoma experience is relaxing and classy and I like it. It's not snobby, even though I don't know jack about wine, I still feel comfortable there and comfortable enough to take recommendations on some new spirits to tickle my taste buds.

Do not buy Groupons to try this place. They attempt to find a way for you not to be able to use it. If you get your meal delivered to your table and are full from ordering two large appetizers - they will not let you put the order you cannot eat as a groupon item! They consider it to go food???? I would only ever go to this place for happy hour food and wine specials otherwise it is too pricey and their was only one person behind the full bar seated area and she was bartending for the entire place. BTW - the entrée they would not let us use the groupon for that we ordered to eat at the table but were too full.... was over priced and took over an hour to arrive at the table! We had two appetizers, 3 happy hour beverages, and one entrée and the bill was $88.00 - this is ridiculous money for the amount of food and the hassle. Have already passed it on to many who are not even going to try the place now.

Having just come from Sonoma--- We couldn't help but take my Mom here for lunch on a visit. The staff is knowledgeable.... The decor chic... The prices right (for lunch) and the Chef is really on his game. We had the lunch special, which included their version of french onion soup, with a crusted mini baguette w/ melted cheese, full salad with passion fruit dressing, Marinated chicken panini with Gruyere Cheese AND kettle chips. The portions are just right... not big (thank god), but perfectly filling. Our waiter, Chris was on top of it and gave us some superb recommendations and was attentive. We will definitely be back... I think it would be a perfect place to host a party. Hmmmm....

The wine list was great, and priced appropriately. Highly recommend the Old World wine flight. The cheese plate went well with the wine. The food was delicious...and I tried a little bit of everyone's from the group. The dessert was not only presented well, but was the perfect way to end the night. Valet is a bit expensive, considering all of the free parking around there...kinda makes no sense to charge that much for valet. They don't even charge that much to valet in Norfolk, where parking is NOT free. Worth a visit to this place...go!

Ordered a medium rare steak and scallop risotto. The scallops and risotto dish was delicious; however, I was not impress how my steak was cooked. The steak was barely cook and cold in the middle. I showed it to the waitress and she brought it back to the kitchen. About 5 minutes later, steak was returned and it was still barely cooked and cold. Keep in mind this steak was about inch thick. Its disappointing that a chef working at a high class restaurant don't know how to cook a steak. After the 2nd time, I decided to just take the steak home and cook it myself. The waitress apologized and removed the steak charge on my receipt.. I was not please that the manager did not apologize. I will never eat at Sonoma again.

A treasure in VB. I am in the area a couple times a year and always make it a point to dine here. The quality of the food is extraordinary, the breadth of the wine selection can't be beat and the service is top-notch. Try the meat and cheese board.

Due to the Yardhouse having an hour long wait, hubs and I decided to splurge on a trip to Sonoma, hoping the atmosphere would satisfy our need to go out on a Friday night. The fact that we could choose our table was a sign that the place was kind of dead, sadly. They had some gentle house music playing and the wait staff was trying to pump it up, but the clientèle was older, sobering, and not excited. We shared the delicious, garlicy shrimp bruschetta, and he had the Hefeweisse while I tried the Gerwertzaminer (like Riesling). Both were great. I like that you can get 2oz servings of their wines, but they serve them at the price of a glass. For dinner I had the chef's special pink peppercorn Mahi with some yummy reddish sauce on thr bottom. Hubs was excited to try the pork belly served over a cheese polenta with a nigre sauce. He said it has an interesting chocolate flavor and he kept forking some avocado with it, but overall he wasn't impressed and didn't finish his meal. I had my dinner with some Chardonnay, which worked well with my fish. Not many other people came in while we ate but I guess if you wanted a quiet, romantic atmosphere, it was perfect. I would recommend the regular menu's almond scallops, and they generally do fish and filet mignon well; but we weren't terribly excited by the chef selections. Sonoma is expensive but classy, and although it wasn't the night out we were hoping for, I would suggest it to anyone else looking to impress a date or have a fancy evening date.

This place is class all the way! It is located in the Town Center area of Virginia Beach, which is a very nice area itself. This place has got some gorgeous decor on the inside, some couches, and a few chairs and tables. They have plenty of drink options such as wine and martinis. I have not had the food here yet, but I definitely plan on going back to try it out. I usually just sit on a couch, pretend I'm in NYC and sip a martini...this place makes for a very fun night out!

Recently tried out Sonoma located in Virginia Beach Town Center. I went there because I have recently joined Groupons and the menu and food photo's on line look great. The groupon cost me $20 and gave me $40 worth of food value. 2 dinners, each having an appertiser and an entre, 1 glass of wine (5 ounce), and two very small nice scotch on the rocks, were ordered. Total cost was $120 plus the groupons voucher, meaning this would have cost us $160. Service fantastic Food mixed, I had the shrimp (large prawns) bruccetta... fantastic, if you go here try this delite. Friend had a caecar salad, it was a whole head of cos lettus cut in half and balanced against each other with a splash of dressing on the plate! Okay its nice for food to look pritty but it has to look appertising. I have had caecar salad in many places around the world and this was less than average and not sure you could call more than the dressing caesar!! Both entres, were good but not great, the meal as an overall was discombobulated in its quality. Basically if you don't mind the price, it is an above average experience for an over inflated price!!

Thanks to Groupon, me & my bf went out for a nice dinner here. It was pretty busy for a Thursday night! But I liked it. I hate stuffy restaurants that I feel so awkward in. Happy Hour was happenin' and it was fun watching the drunkards. Haha. We ordered their Korean "Steamed Buns" which were amazing. They were like tacos and were a perfect appetizer! The bf ordered their Pasta Sonoma while I had their Pork Loin Chop. Their Pork Loin Chop was just recently added to their dinner menu because it was a special they were running. Well... my pork was undercooked. That's the only reason this joint didn't get 5 stars. But everything else was amazing. The potatoes, the onion chutney, yummmm! AND they had my moscato d'asti. ;D

Only been here once with a friend of mine, and the server behind the counter must have been having a bad day. In any event, I'd already gotten a shake from the nearby Coldstone, so I didn't need anything from this place. My friend wanted to try the port, though, so he gave that a shot, and when I politely declined a drink from the server, she said, "A milkshake? Really?" So to humor her, I ordered a drink despite not really needing/desiring one. I can't recall what it was, but it was far too bitter for my tastes. Nevertheless, I drank it down, and made no attempt to hide my dislike for it. "Whatever," she snorted as she went back to her friends. Needless to say, no tip, and no return visit. This place blows. A serious blemish on the town center.

Two for lunch on a Tuesday. Pros: Prompt and friendly service, great curried crab soup, very nice take on the BLT, decent prices, nice decor. Cons: Seemed like they overdressed the salad and then, just in case, added a jigger's worth of dressing. The (lunchtime) sommelier didn't know anything past "That one's French, and this one's Spanish"--a direct quotation which was followed by a blank stare in anticipation of my decision.

I decided to stop by this place for an appetizer and a few glasses of wine. The restaurant has an elegant feel to it. Very comfortable floor plan. Nice bar area with a huge selection of wine. I only had an appetizer but the menu looked pretty good and I'm sure their food is good. I had the steamed mussel appetizer which was good. Not the best I've had and not because the quality of the mussels were lacking or the way they were cooked. They were cooked just right. I just wasn't a fan of the red wine sauce. I just didn't think it complimented the mussels well. I will say its an unusual sauce/broth for mussels and I'm sure many of their patrons would disagree with me. It was well presented and the bread was fresh and great for dipping. The cheese plates looked great and the service was very good. I will try this place again for a full meal next time I'm in the Norfolk area. I really enjoyed the wine flight I had. They have a great wine selection.

My husband and I went here for dinner on date night after getting a Groupon for it. The atmosphere for a date was perfect; nice lighting, music, ambiance. We decided to go with a few appetizers rather than entrees. We started w/ the scallops special & a bottle of Chianti. I'm not a big fan of scallops but my husband loved them. They were advertised to be atop a bed of chorizo & polenta however, I could find no chorizo =( We then ordered a 1/2 meat & cheese board which consisted on 2 meats & 2 cheeses along w/ honey, olives, apples, onion raisin chutney & sugared pecans. We both LOVED this! Then we ordered a ceaser salad which we added chicken to. I was kinda let down here. The salad came as a wedge salad which was not mentioned on the menu. & I like my lettuce to be already cut for me please! As far as taste, I've had better ceaser salads. We then ordered 2 desserts along w/ 2 dessert wines. We both thought it was amazing! I ordered the chocolate truffle (unsure of exact name) & my husband ordered the seasonal creme brulee. They were both beautifully plated & SO good! To add, our waiter was also a sommelier. Her suggestions were perfect. Neither my husband nor I usually drink dessert wines & we were SO impressed w/ those she suggested! Our tab ended up being $144 after all mentioned. A bit pricey for us but def a treat we will be back for again. However, when we return we will be ordering the wine, the cheese & meat boards, the desserts & dessert wine only since they were our favs.

Went here for the first time with some coworkers for wine and appetizers. Since I couldn't partake in the shellfish goodies, I ordered the Steamed Buns for an app. Don't be fooled by the name--it was Korean BBQ duck and it was yummy! I am usually scared to order duck, since it is often gamey-tasting, but this was not at all. Very glad I decided on it! Everyone in our group got a wine flight; I opted for some nice summer whites. I was very impressed with their selection...even the biggest wine snob will be able to find a large selection to choose from! The service wasn't the friendliest, but they were attentive. I can't wait for my next work trip down here, so I can pay them another visit!

My husband and I went there for brunch today because we had a Groupon and we had never been there before. Service was good without being overly attentive and annoying. I started with the French Onion Soup which was good, but I wished that the cheesy crouton on top was put under the broiler (the cheese was just melted). For our main course, I had the Sonoma BLT and my husband had the Sonoma Benedict. My BLT was great but it could have used some seasoning on the tomatoes. The Benedict was crazy good and the egg was poached perfectly. We decided we had room for dessert so we split a scoop of coffee gelato that was to die for. We will definitely be going back. The prices are right and the food was good.

We LOVE Sonoma. This is my favorite spot whenever I get the chance to head home. From the decor to it's menu to the staff, just superb. It brings me back my cosmopolitan vibe. Try their Charcuterie. I promise you will not regret it. See you there!

I've gone to Sonoma a few times just to sip wine with friends. I've sat at tables both inside and outside. Inside is very nice, with upscale furnishings and a chic bar area. Outside, there is a nice patio on the plaza where you can get fresh air and do some people watching. The patio is usually more crowded than inside on a nice day. Sort of reminds you of a hotel bar or something that is designed more for the middle-aged crowd. I've never been enticed to order anything off the menu. When my friends and I got hungry, we walked over to another town center restaurant with more options.

After a pleasant lunch a while back at Sonoma, my wife bought a "grupon" thinking we would enjoy a dinner, too. The location is great, the decor "cool"and elegant and the greeting by staff was welcoming. The menu is extensive with great sounding descriptions of fine dining. The food is on the pricey side but we were expecting some good times on our palate. But then things came to dead stop. The broth surrounding my wife's mussels was too salty to eat but my appetizer was OK. Then came my main course, a pasta with Serrano ham bits. It, too,was so salty as to be in edible and I left 80% in the dish. We decided at that point to call it quits on the food and have coffee elsewhere. I don't think we will go back given the other good restaurants in the same area where the food is edible and even tasty.

We went here for dinner for a friend's birthday and I just didn't care for it. I expected it to be pricey, but I just didn't enjoy my food, and the dinner menu was disappointing for someone that doesn't care for seafood. I love pasta, and shrimp is the only seafood I enjoy, so I ordered the Pasta Sonoma. I did not care for it one bit. The sauce was thin and just didn't suite my taste. On the plus side, their desserts are amazing. Each of us ordered a different dessert. The presentation was beautiful and they were all delicious. I won't return here for dinner, but it would be a good place to go after dinner elsewhere for some drinks and desserts.

What a great place. Was traveling on business and needed a nice glass of wine (or 2, 3) and dinner. After reading my trusty friends from the Tidewater reviews, i discovered i was near Sonoma's. First of all, great interior! Very low key lighting and great dining area as well as bar area. The wine list is extensive. I started off with a "Big Red" flight that included a couple of big bold Cabs as well as a spanish wine and a spicy Zin. For starters, i ordered the Parsnip Soup. It was very creamy with a perfect amount of curry and lump crab meat - awesome and perfect with the wine! For dinner i ordered a nightly special that was blackened alaskan salmon over a onion polenta mash with steamed broccolini. The salmon was perfectly cooked, very moist and awesome. They suggested a Pinot that went very well with my dinner. I sat at the bar and the service was very good. Everyone was very nice and checked on me often. Can't go hungry or thirsty here - i will be back!

Have been to Sonoma twice. Once was for dinner. Portions - small. But very tasty. I had the pasta primavera which was good. My bf had the ghnocchi....he was disappointed w/ the portion, as he is a big guy. I like the wine selection and our waitress was knowledgable and friendly. I liked my lunch better....the prices for lunch are moderate (7-12) and they have a decent selection. Our waiter was great and we got a bottle and sat outside which was fun. I love the decor, as a previous poster said - it's tres chic. I'll be going back!

I've been to Sonoma a few times now and I can certainly applaud the effort to create something different in Virginia Beach. The meals I had were very good, but not totally spectacular. I have had the crab dip a couple of times, which is actually one of the best crab dips I have ever had. Unlike most places, it's not drowning in cream cheese - instead it is a healthy portion of crab meat with tender artichokes and mozzarella served with lightly grilled baguette slices. It's very, very good. The mushroom bruschetta - not so good - it was drowning in a butter sauce with melted cheese and hardly a mushroom to be found. It reminded me of something that comes from the freezer section at Publix. Generally I don't order Salmon from a restaurant, but I was in the mood. Most places overcook salmon which is why I don't order it, however, the staff at Sonoma asked for a temperature on my fish, which I appreciate and is a rare find. It was cooked perfectly (medium) and was a very fresh piece of fish. It didn't have the strong fishy taste/smell so often associated with restaurant salmon. However, and shame on me, I forgot to ask them to withhold the Hollandaise, which I loathe. Now, I could have been a prick and told the waiter to take it back, but I scraped it off and dealt with it. Let's face it, it was my fault. That being said, I have never seen that much hollandaise on a piece of fish in all of the restaurants which I have visited. The fish was, pardon the pun, swimming in the stuff. Despite that, I enjoyed the meal and am looking forward to next time without the sauce. The accompaniment, ham risotto, was just ok. It was a typical American cooked risotto - a bit overcooked and under seasoned, but passable. The wine list is very good and the beer menu has some nice surprises on it. I would like to see a bigger selection of charcuterie in the future, but my guess is the local crowd isn't creating the demand. Nevertheless, it's a good place which I'm sure will become a somewhat regular for a decent meal in VB.

Among Virginia Beach's endless restaurants chains, fast food dumps and shitty seafood places is this relatively high-end joint. It's my standby now for a better than average meal. I've been several times and the menu is interesting and appetizing, the specials never disappoint and there is a very large wine selection. I don't really have much else to say. Check out the website for the menu. Great ambiance for group dinners, dates, whatever. Usually some good people watching here too. Don't bring your damn kids. Only downside I've seen is it's probably a few bucks more than it should be. Get the eff over it. Welcome to VB.

Went here for a "Wives Night Out" Valentine's Day celebration- our husbands were out to sea, so us gals got together for a fun night out. We had a reservation at 5pm. By 7pm, we were barely finishing our entree when the server informed us we had to "wrap things up because the next party reservation had arrived and this was the biggest table in the restaurant and their reservation is at 7, so we need to wrap up your dinner so they can be seated". Ok, first of all, who does that at an expensive restaurant, and secondly, since when do reservations have a time limit?! We informed the waiter that it was NEVER mentioned to us that our reservation was only from 5-7. Had we known that, we would have reserved two blocks of time, or most likely, chosen another restaurant. His reply? "Well, you didn't start ordering food till your entire party arrived and that was after 5:30...". This guy had the nerve to blame US for not knowing we were on a 2 hr time limit in his restaurant. And please know, since our wives club was pretty large, there were about 12-15 girls there... Girls don't get together for dinner intending to only chat for 2 hours and call it a night!! Needless to say, no matter how incredibe the food might havd been (surprisingly disappointing meal actually), the service was so poor that I refuse to ever step foot in that restaurant ever again. I think the worst part was that they couldnt have cared less the reason we were all there together in the first place... because our husbands were at sea for the next 7 months, fighting a war in the Middle East, and we couldn't celebrate Valentines Day with them, so we all celebrated together, our own little home front combat unit. If you want to risk it, go ahead, but recognize that dollars and money are the priority at Sonoma, not the customers.

I recently went to Sonoma for the third time in about five weeks, and the service gets worse and worse. More on that in a bit.....The location great, and the decor, feeling inside is really nice. Though the menu prices are high, and the glasses of wine over the top. it could be enjoyable... BUT....the wait staff, in particular the bar tenders are out right RUDE, UNFRIENDLY and on the verge of putting this place out of business. Twice now my son and I had Andrew, the rudest of the team , but by no means the only A$$#h((& there. . Listen up. this is Va Beach.. ok, I have been treated worse in better places! Seriously, his sneers, ignoring, no facial or eye contacts, and contempt should be addressed by someone in managment.. For now I will continue to eat at the other great establishments at Towne Center, but drink my libations elsewhere.

I'm torn between 3 & 4 stars for this restaurant/bar. I love the vibe, love the wine, service was great, apps were great, but the entrees were lacking. My husband & I were given a Groupon for Sonoma. This was his 1st time dining there & my 2nd. We really enjoyed the overall experience with the only downside being our entrees. Mine was delicious, great flavor, but it was a very small portion for the price. I can totally appreciate quality over quantity, but I still expect a decent portion when paying $24-$35 for an entrée. For example, I ordered the Pasta Sonoma (shrimp & scallop dish) for $24. It was served with TWO shrimp & TWO teeny tiny scallops. The flavor was delicious, but I found the size of the dish to be rather small, especially the scant amount of seafood in a seafood dish. It may not have bothered me so much if it wasn't for the fact that I had just eaten at One Fish Two Fish a few nights prior & had a seafood dish that totally blew me away for the SAME PRICE. My husband ordered a fish special from Sonoma for his entrée & he said it was good, but not amazing, & the portion size of his was average. So, I've decided that I love Sonoma for atmosphere, apps, & wine. I'd love to come here again with the intention of ordering a salad & sharing a few apps over a bottle of wine. But I'll be skipping the entrees on my next visit... But who needs an entree when you have absolutely delish cheese boards & wine? And I do need to give a shout out to Sonoma's cheese boards because ours was served with things I NEVER eat (figs, caramelized onions, etc) & I scarfed every bit of it down like I hadn't eaten in a week; stellar flavor combinations.

Perhaps we caught them on a bad night but the steak was poorly cooked, the risotto was crunchy and poorly seasoned. For approximately $50 a person I expect much more. Much better restaurants close by.

Totally awesome place. It's right by the Westin where we were staying on business. The crew was great, the decor was great, and there were lots of cute girls running around -- always a good start. The food was very good. I happened to be there on a day when they had a french onion soup which is the best I've ever had. Usually french onion soup is decent but they slop a pound of cheese on top of it. At Sonoma it was instead a slice of thin toasted bread with some cheese shreds on it, which melted in and tasted great. The only animals I eat come from the sea so I can't speak to the steak/chicken/duck but I did have the ahi tuna dish which is fantastic, I highly recommend. We had a couple of wine connoisseurs with us and they totally loved the selection including a bunch of relatively rare bottles that have no reason to be here in VA Beach normally. We really dug it.

I'm giving it three stars for potential. The wine list is decent and they do offer flights, which is nice. I also like they they offer 2 oz pours and 5 oz pours, so you can taste more wines. I hated the fact that this is more of a dinner place. When I'm at a wine bar I want snacks and cheeses, lots of cheese. I was disappointed that there were only four cheeses on the cheese board. A travesty! App prices were between $9 and $12 and our dinner was $34 for a tenderloin. It was good, although not hot, but not $34 good. Overpriced in my opinion. I'll go back to have wine, but not for dinner.

We had a quick drink and a cheese board app before heading somewhere else to dinner. The wine selection was excellent. The wine flights, which you can substitute other wines with, was a great option for tasting three different wines. The cheese board we had was excellent with 2 cured meats (duck and salami), 2 cheeses, assorted crackers, and garnishes/relishes that included an apple-onion chutney (amazing flavor), gurkin pickles, honey, candied pecans, and black olives. So many flavors on one board! We also ordered fresh bread which is made to order, and was hot and delicious. We were surprisingly full after that! Oh well, I'd rather have an app kill my appetite than not! Also, the environment was very neat with stylish details and modern tile accents. The feux fireplace was nice touch. And, all the wines were hooked up a state-of-the-art seal-fresh system of some sort, so the bottles that are opened do not lose their initial taste like they normally do just after opening.

  • Kevin D.

The food was subpar. The duck was lacking in flavor, not trimmed of fat, and very small in quantity compared to some other local bistros. The ribeye was great with the homemade steak sauce. All the sides for both dishes were greatly overseasoned. Sweet potatoes could not be discerned as sweet potatoes over the butter, salt, and pepper. Yukon gold mashed potatoes with horseradish were more like horseradish with Yukon gold mashed potatoes. Onion straws were not drained properly out of the fryer, leaving the breading (and plate) greasy. Coconut risotto was the only decent side. Service was adequate, but nothing spectacular. Tiny water glasses needed constant refill, which took way too long considering there were only 3 occupied tables in the restaurant. They certainly didn't warrant the mandated 20% tip for using a restaurant.com certificate. The wine list is great, but not for California wines. By the glass selection is poor for cabs (as usual). Prices on cocktails and premium wine bottles is significantly higher than other local restaurants, even for the same cocktails and same bottles of wine. Overall, it was a poor experience. I will not dine there again.

Centrally located in the heart of the Virginia Beach Town Center, this is a local jewel. The signage is hard to see. But positioned under a large well known steak chain, it has ambiance, a sexy decor, great staff, and lots of choices. Small portions, large portions, beef, seafood, duck, and great greens. What could be better? We did the duck and the fish. Hey! It's Virginia Beach. You gotta try the fish. The chef is awesome.

Up until I hosted a private event at Sonoma Wine Bar, I thought it was one of the best things that had ever happened to Hampton Roads. Good/fresh food, changing menu, well-trained chefs. A great wine list considering the area. The wines on tap are such a great idea, one I'd use in my own restaurant if I ever went that route in the future. But, unfortunately, my opinion changed after I asked Sonoma Wine Bar to host an event for my friends and family. We live out of town and were coming to visit friends and family following our marriage out of state. A contract for the party was sent to me with an error on it, so I emailed the restaurant back to let them know and they verified the change, assuring me that this would be correct the night of the party. I arrive at the restaurant early for the reception to be sure everything is set up the way we envisioned it and I noticed as they're placing the food out that the mistake that was on the contract ended up being a mistake at the party! Mistakes do happen, I wasn't totally upset about it although I did ask them to make it right. They couldn't completely redo the food because they had only ordered enough biscuits for the number of guests, so while I didn't like one of the components on the biscuit, all of them ended up with it because they couldn't be completely redone. They did do a make shift fix of the issue. During the party, some of my guests did order sodas/tea but most of them were drinking the wine that I had provided for everyone. We ended up with a much higher bill in the end than we had anticipated. I touched base with the manager by email following the event, first and foremost to thank her for the beautiful party, but also to let her know they need to be more careful on contract changes in the future to be sure that the correct food is served. I also mentioned maybe having some type of arrangement ahead of time concerning soda/tea orders because the charge ended up being over $50 on my bill (thereby increasing the service charge and taxes so it ended up being more). I felt sure the manager, who had been great up until this point, would respond thanking me for my business and at least acknowledging my concerns. I did not receive ANY type of response. I then waited a couple of months and resent the email with an additional message that I felt it wasn't typical of her character to not respond so I thought I'd try again. STILL NO RESPONSE. I know I had a valid email address for her, as we had been emailing back and forth for several months before the party. And for this reason, I know I wasn't ending up in her spam folder. I can not think of a reason that no one responded to my email. I felt this was highly unprofessional and completely changed my opinion about the level of service offered at Sonoma Wine Bar. Customer service is such a big part of the entire experience a customer has at a restaurant. I try not to hold restaurants in Hampton Roads to the standards that we are used to living in Northern California (dining at places such as Bouchon and Bottega) but that is a baseline acceptable level of service. We still frequent Hampton Roads and are disappointed that this will no longer be a staple on our agenda while in town. Totally disappointing and frustrating.

Sonoma is easily one of the top three or four most beautiful restaurants in Hampton Roads--and not in an ostentatious or trying-too-hard sort of way. It's just elegant and modern, yet inviting. I have yet to have a full-fledged dinner there but I've had appetizers and wine several times. I tried the tuna tartare served in Belgian endive leaves and it was delicious. A friend and I went one night and did the wine flights. For the uninitiated, that's where they bring you usually five or six mini glasses of wine and they explain what each of them is so you can taste and compare. It's really fun and a great way to learn about wine. We ordered their gourmet cheese board to go with the flight, which had olives, candied nuts and honey in addition to the cheeses. It was fabulous. We sat at this one cool table they have on the left hand side that has fluffy comfy chairs and a coffee table style platform so you feel like you're just lounging in a ski lodge or something while you are eating. I highly recommend it. Sonoma is one of only a couple locally owned restaurants in Town Center (the only other one I know of is Zushi), which is one more reason to support it.

I really like this place. The atmosphere is really chill and the menu is creative fusion fair with plenty of fun flavors. The wine selection is really good and the occasional specials make key selections fit your budget. The service is good and the staff is knowledgeable (in general) about the wines. They have a great meat and cheese board...pair this with a nice red flight by the fireplace or out on the patio (in the spring time) and you are primed for a great evening.

Well last time I was there was a year ago, it was better then! Although they have an extensive wine list they didn't have two of my choices, we had to settle, The suggestion was OK, not great for a $70 bottle. The mussels and roll apps were mediocre, No real flavor and the chef should learn to cut sushi rolls with a knife not a butter knife, ugly presentation. I had the Almond Scallops, would have been good if the coating didn't mask the great taste the scallops. My wife enjoyed her Atlantic Salmon. Hopefully it was just an off night for the $200 I dropped without salad, dessert and coffee. We will try it again, oh yes the service was great!

Great food and huge wine selection. A little on the $$$ side but you get what you pay for. I had the stuffed P Chops and a bottle of Pinot. I dropped about $150 for dinner and wine for two but can be done much cheaper. They also have cheese and meat boards from $8-$40. Good place to go to have a glass of vino, cheese and converse.

I love Sonoma. I have been there a few times and I think that it just has good vibes as soon as you walk in the door. As mentioned before, the ambiance is perfect. If you want a girls wine night out, or a romantic dinner for two, you can find that here. My favorite dish is an appetizer that was pan seared scallops with a cognac chocolate sauce. That was absolutely the best thing I have ever tasted!! The only problem is that is not always on the menu. But if you happen to go when it IS on the menu, definitely order it! I also love the filet for the main course, I've ordered it a few times and each time it is cooked exactly right. I would definitely give it a try if you're looking for something new.

I enjoyed Sonoma for their dinners and wine list. They also have a nice atmosphere that allows you to kick back and relax. I've been here 3 times already, and once the mussels were not cooked completely through (some have not opened up) and they had no problem bringing up another order for us. This is also a wine bar and the staff seems quite young. Because of this I felt that it was a little hard for them to accurately express or help with selection. All in all it was a very good experience and would go back again.

Have visited Sonoma four times. It has an interesting menu, New American, Southwest, Fusion all the fashionable names in contemporary dining would apply. Enjoyed the tuna tartar app and crab cakes both done with some panache, duck was also good. Overall the food was good if not memorable. Found the service average at best each visit. Sonoma's wine is spectacularly displayed; I only wish they put as much thought into value. As a pinot noir devotee I found the list wanting, several Domaine Serene priced above the market. Sonoma has worked very hard on decor, setting, but for all the investment I do not think there was a 'comfortable' table in the house. One time we sat in front of a faux fireplace; the seats were so low we had to lean forward between our knees to reach the table. I would recommend that Sonoma put as much work into their food and service as they have into appearances!
